How to use a QR code well

A QR code is only a container for a link. Everything that makes it work well happens before and after the scan: where the link points, how long it stays valid, and whether you can tell how many people used it.

Print it big enough

As a rule of thumb the printed code should be at least one tenth of the scanning distance. A code read from two metres away needs to be around 20 cm wide. Choose the large size above for anything that goes on a poster or a shop window.

Leave the quiet zone

The white margin around the code is part of the code. Cropping it tight or placing the code on a busy photograph is the most common reason a scan fails.

Point it at a short link, not the final address

A long URL produces a dense code that is harder to scan, and once it is printed you can never change where it goes. Encoding a short link instead gives you a smaller, more reliable code and lets you repoint or close it later.
